Tokyo, Japan 10 & 11 June 2017 – Singapore made history by winning the Asian Cup for the 3rd consecutive year. The heroic feat in Tokyo came after similar successes in Melbourne in 2015 and Singapore in 2016. This year’s competition was hosted by Japan at the Adachi City, Tokyo.

Three national teams competed in the Nations event, with Australia and Japan finishing second and third respectively. The team event is competed based on the results of four individual matches, with one point awarded for a win. In the Nations event, Singapore defeated Japan 4:0 and Australia 2:1 to win the overall Asian Cup title.

Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia, the other Asian countries registered with the FISTF (the world body for sports table football), did not send a team.

The team event is competed based on the results of four individual matches, with one point awarded for a win. In the Nations event, Singapore defeated Japan 4:0 and Australia 2:1 to win the overall Asian Cup title. In the Club team event, Singapore’s SG Lions TFC which formed the bulk of this year’s national team took the championship in style by defeating Japan’s Yokohama OSC 4:0 in the final.

Singapore’s Tan Kok Wee was crowned Asian Cup Champion in the individual Open category after a nail-biting 2:1 win over Australia’s Raffaele Lombardi. Tan’s victory was particularly gratifying as the individual Open event had attracted highly ranked European players from France, Italy and Wales. Singapore’s team Captain Bernard Lim, made the semi-finals of the Open event and the finals of the Veteran’s event.

The weekend in Tokyo also witnessed the establishment of the Confederation of Asian Sports Table Football Association (CASTFA), an Asian chapter of FISTF. The memorandum of undertaking was signed by the Presidents of the national table football association of Japan, Singapore and Australia, and endorsed by FISTF’s Vice President, Steve Dettre. Japan’s Kenzo Koi was appointed the inaugural President of CASTFA after leading a remarkably successful Asian Cup in Tokyo. The CASTFA presidency will be rotated every 2 years. The primary aims of CASTFA are to support the development of sports table football across the Asian region, including promoting and helping form national associations in other Asian countries. CASTFA will also help raise the profile of the Asian Cup and bring it to the next level in terms of prestige and quality of competition.

In line with objectives of CASTFA, the TFAS will be stepping up efforts to promote sports table football in Singapore. These will include promotional activities in conjunction with SportSG’s inaugural Singapore Football Week 2017 from 22 to 29 July 2017.

TFAS Cup 2017 – the Results!

The latest TFAS Cup 2017 drew to a rousing close as a new CHAMPION was crowned!!
But before all that, it was the day where the new and the young batled it out at the tables in the Amateur and the U19 Events on 11th March 2017 at the Singapore Sports Hub Library.

The Amateur Event was particular interesting this year as we saw quite a few ‘new’ players jumping into the flicking fray. Nevertheless, they definitely gave their slightly more seasoned players a good run for their money. Also in this year’s Amateur event was our delightful visitor from Perth, Australia, Mr Hugh Best.

It was indeed a good half-day of action, which ended with our very own Irwan Iskandar, taking the Top Honours for this event, followed closely by evergreen John Edwards, new-comer Firdaus Bahrin and our esteem visitor Hugh Best.17212216_1447703331967358_6129434322155584758_o

Happening in conjunction with the Amateur event was the U19 (under 19 years old) Event which saw a couple of young players, Yi De and Tanishq bravely taking on their more seasoned opponents. However, though new and young, they too managed to get some good games in and impressed with their game play.

As expected, seasoned winner of the category, Giovanni Choong, took the top prize, followed by Mohd Bolkiah, Asyraf Rizal and young Tanishq Chandiramani.17212135_1447711581966533_8549276798233988233_o

The day concluded with the fun mixed team event, where all players present on that day were drawn into groups of 4, to pit and out-strategize each other in this event. 4 groups were formed and after some close intense games, couple with the wit of the teams, Team Delta (aka The Delta Force) comprising of Team Captain Bernard Lim, Nic Tan, Fauzi Ghani and Rizal Ahmad swept all the other 3 teams away, and took the Team Champion trophies.

After a good night rest, the players returned once again to the Singapore Sports Hub Library for yet another day of competition. But this day is the main Open Event, where each player plays for their own to try take away the Top Honour and be crowned as the Champion of the TFAS Cup 2017!

This day also saw the return of many ex-champions of the past Subbuteo days in the likes of Chandru Chugani, Den Mulia and returning 1985 SA Cup Champion, Ashley Tan! and they were joined by another veteran, Marc Tan Yew Loy.
No doubt, the action on the 2nd day of events were super tense, but yet fun-filled to the brim, where all players turn-up a gear in all their games, producing some truly deft touches and superb show of quality shooting capabilities.

As usual, it was a day of hard and intense table football action all around. In the end, it was a young Anas Rahamat, who braved through all his matches in his usual cool and composed style of play, to meet the previous Champion, Rudy Hesty in the Grand Final.

But before we go to the Big game, a Minor Final (aka Plate Event) was played out between our young Isaac Lim and Nic Tan. Though it was a minor final, Isaac played with much gusto and really took the game to Nic, where an end-to-end match ensued, ending with Isaac taking his very 1st Open Event crown of the Plate Winner!!

What followed was a Sports Table Football Final that surprised everyone, who expected Rudy to retain his crown, but only for Anas to put up one of his best display since he started playing the game, and literally swept aside Rudy, with an astounding victory that left the cheering crowd in awe.
Anas had basically every touch, every pass and every shot going for him while Rudy was having a hard time breaking Anas relentless attacks down. In the end, it was clear who was the stronger player in this final and the time ran out to end the game to loud cheers for this promising youngster.
